Need: A refugee family may lose hope when uprooted from their home and forced to flee their country. Many refugees cannot return home due to their fear of being persecuted again. Many refugees are not allowed to settle in their country of temporary asylum.
Refugees suffer in uncertainty and fear. They need a faith group or a community group to sponsor them.
Responsibilities: The sponsoring group needs to provide the refugee newcomer family with basic living costs, access to settlement services, and personal support for up to the refugees’ first year in Canada.
Supports: MIIC (Welcome Place) can assist Manitoba groups:
- decide which refugee family to sponsor,
- complete refugee sponsorship applications,
- develop plans to support sponsored newcomers,
- coordinate settlement support services,
- overcome challenges newcomers face, and
- provide available financial guarantees or assistance.*
