How to Find or Form a Group to Sponsor Family Linked Refugees

Do you have relatives or friends who are refugees, who want to resettle in Canada, and who want to be reunited with you?

There are several ways for you to find or form a group to sponsor these refugees.

Your community group in Manitoba may be prepared to sponsor your relatives or friends.

Your own faith group may be willing to sponsor them.

A local sponsoring group may agree to do so.

You may be able to form a Group of 5 to sponsor them.

Do you belong to a community group in Manitoba?

Contact the leaders of your group and ask them about sponsoring your relatives or friends to come to Manitoba as refugees, with your support. Local groups, working as partners of Welcome Place, will consider your request, based on our criteria, depending on their capacity and conditional on your support.

Community groups in Manitoba, that are not already coordinating family linked refugee sponsorships, are encouraged to contact Welcome Place to discuss refugee sponsorship possibilities.

Are you part of a local faith group?

Ask your faith group to sponsor your relatives or friends to come to Canada as refugees. Tell them how you are prepared to help support your relatives or friends during their first year in Canada.

In Manitoba, refer your faith group to Welcome Place for information about sponsoring refugees, for an application kit, and for other possible forms of assistance.

Do you need to look for a local refugee sponsorship group?

Contact Anglican, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Roman Catholic, United Church, or any other groups in your neighbourhood, you think might be interested in sponsoring your relatives or friends to come to Canada as refugees.

Tell them where you live and how you will help support your relatives or friends during their first year in Canada as refugee newcomers.

In Manitoba, refer prospective sponsoring groups to Welcome Place for information about sponsoring refugees, for an application kit, and for other possible forms of assistance.

Do you want to form a Group of 5?

Ask five, or more, local relatives or friends with a strong, steady source of income to join you in forming a ‘Group of 5' for the purpose of sponsoring the refugees of greatest concern to you personally. (Other acceptable sources of funding will be considered by Citizenship and Immigration Canada when they assess your capacity to sponsor refugees.)

In Manitoba, contact Welcome Place for more information about ‘Group of 5' refugee sponsorship, for an application kit, and for other possible forms of assistance.
